The eye and the mind tend to have their own opinion of how the room - with fixed dimensions - seem to change shape when parts of the room are coloured lighter or darker than other parts. This is something to be very aware of when choosing materials and adding colour to walls, ceiling and floor.

Below you can see what 'tricks' the mind plays in various situations:

A dark floor with pale walls and pale ceiling will make the room look wider	A dark floor in combination with dark walls and a bright ceiling will create a 'cellar' effect
A darker floor and a darker ceiling will make the room look wider and lower	A light floor, light back-wall and dark ceiling and side walls will create a 'tunnel' effect
A light ceiling and light floor in combination with dark walls will accentuate horizontal lines	When all surfaces have the same dark colour it all turns into a shapeless room
A light floor, ceiling and back-wall together with dark side walls will make the room narrower, higher and deeper	A room with light floor and pale wales will create a 'roomy' effect. However, very pale colours will make it 'cold' and impersonal.
A dark back wall with light walls and floor will optical "shorten" the room - as if the back wall 'comes towards you'.
